Seaboard Foods receives praise for its animal welfare program and auditing process
SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan.
(Jan. 17, 2007) — FACTA, LLC, released a positive animal welfare audit report to Seaboard Foods and praised the company for its animal welfare program and commitment to continuous improvement. FACTA is an independent, science-based animal care training and auditing company with credentialed animal welfare auditors and educators. This is the fourth consecutive year FACTA has conducted third-party animal welfare audits for Seaboard Foods.
Dr. John McGlone, FACTA chief scientific officer and chief executive officer, praised Seaboard Foods for its comprehensive animal welfare practices and auditing practices.
“Seaboard deserves credit for its program which is far and away the best in the United States,” says McGlone. “No one else in the pig industry is conducting this degree of audits. Seaboard staff conducts intensive internal audits, and when they identify issues, their timely resolution is documented. FACTA has now observed more than 2 million pigs managed by Seaboard and each issue brought up by FACTA receives immediate and credible attention until the issue is brought to resolution. Seaboard Foods is a leader and should be proud of its accomplishments. Customers can be extremely comfortable with Seaboard’s animal handling practices and audit process, and the Seaboard animal welfare oversight program goes well beyond any other integrated program in the world.”
Scientifically trained animal welfare experts conduct unannounced third-party audits of Seaboard Foods’ farms and plant each year. FACTA chooses the specific sites for unannounced audits that include reviews of animals, facilities, animal handling practices and training. In addition, FACTA reviews internal animal welfare audit reports conducted throughout the year. Seaboard Foods began regular internal audits at its farms as part of the company’s continuous improvement process two years ago. In 2003, Seaboard Foods secured FACTA’s third-party audit services as part of the company’s comprehensive, science-based animal welfare program.
“With the combination of our internal audits and the third-party audits conducted by FACTA, we can provide our customers with assurances our animals are raised in a proper and humane manner,” says Terry Holton, Seaboard Foods senior vice president of sales and marketing. “Not only is a comprehensive, science-based animal welfare program with documented third-party audits the right thing do, it also allows us to provide our customers with the highest quality pork. Science has proven that calm, well-cared animals improve overall meat quality. Our customers can be confident the pork they purchase from Seaboard Foods was produced in a humane and responsible manner.”
Seaboard Foods has a long tradition of proper animal handling and it’s a top priority emphasized throughout the company’s integrated system. Any employee who works with animals must go through training and sign the company’s commitment to animal welfare document.
“This year’s audit report and praise from FACTA is a fantastic tribute to a world class system. Everyone at Seaboard Foods should be commended on a great job,” says Rod Brenneman, Seaboard Foods president. “Our employees demonstrate every day their commitment to our animal welfare program, and they realize that as part of an integrated food system, animal welfare is important to Seaboard Foods and our customers.”
